While streaming services like Netflix and Hulu Plus do come with their closed captions, sometimes you just want to use a particular subtitle SRT file. We’ll show you how to use your own subtitles on any streaming service on any computer. Check it out after the bump.
Since English is not my first language, and since I haven’t yet travelled all over the world and interacted with all people with all those different English accents, my English listening comprehension remains somewhat weak. As a result, I have to rely on subtitles for any movie, TV show or video game whose characters do not use simple English.
Now, if you’re a regular streamer, you likely use Netflix or Hulu Plus to get your movie and TV show entertainment fix. The subtitles support there is actually quite decent. You’ll find captions in English and in many other languages. This likely covers use cases for most people out there.
However, at times you can’t do without your own subtitles. Whether it’s a different language, or the way it is shown on-screen, you use custom subtitles. That’s where Subtitle Heliumcomes in.

Subtitle Helium: Custom Floating Subtitles For Netflix, Hulu Plus etc.
Developed by Martin Kaše, Subtitle Helium is a browser extension for Google Chrome that allows you to use custom subtitles on any streaming service. It works on Mac, Windows, Linux and ChromeOS – basically any platform where Google Chrome works.
The extension is quite easy to use. You just need to give it an SRT subtitles file, and start playing the related movie and TV show. It will automatically progress in sync with it. The subtitles are displayed a semi-transparent floating bar that’s separate from the browser. This way you can position it wherever you like.
This is the first public release of Subtitle Helium. At version 0.0.1, you can expect for it to have a bug or two. It’s not deeply customizable, but I’m sure if this becomes popular, the developer will keep adding useful new features.
