There are many Virtual Reality headsets out there but there is still scope of one that offers true immersive gaming experience – by the way Ocular Rift has gained fanfare on Kickstarter, quickly surpassing their $250,000 goal in some hours, we guess we have the headset of our dreams in the making. Designed to change the way we perceive gaming, the Ocular Rift has an wide viewing field, a hi-res display and offers ultra-low latency head tracking to provide the a truly immersive VR experience like never before.
Ocular is raising money on Kickstrater by rewarding early prototype Rifts and development kits to game developers who pledge a minimum of $275. The development kit includes a copy of DOOM 3 BFG, which is the first Oculus Rift-ready game you can lay your hands on.
The Rift is surely dynamic in respect to present day 3D gaming systems, but still the hardware isn’t actually finalized, for now it is 1280×800 (640×800 per eye) res device that weighs 22g and has 6 degrees of freedom and 110 degrees diagonal / 90 degrees horizontal field of view. Oculus is thus giving out early prototypes of the Rift to developers so that they can come up with suggestions as soon as possible to better the hardware so that a consumer version with more immersive features can be created at competitive price.
