Now you can make calls or text chat on board Virgin Atlantis flights in Britain

Virgin Atlantis in a surprising move has become the first ever British airline to permit phone calls and text messaging on board flights to help passengers get in touch with people in case of emergency or other special moments. This initiation has been incorporated on Virgin’s new A330 airbus between London and New York with the facility offered in all corners of the cabin but only ten people can use it simultaneously at any given point of time and the service will be inactive during take-off or landing to avoid any type of interference with vital airline communications.

Making calls and texting will come at the price of £1 per minute to call aboard the flight and 20p to send a text as the signal will be redirected through a satellite into the mobile communication network. Using a small telecommunication base station called piccell which is the size of an A4 size paper. This comes as a welcome addition for passengers who need communication channel at all times while on the other hand anti-noise action group Noisedirect is against this step.
