Migraine can be really agonizing and the fear of it striking out of the blue anytime can really be depressing. Thankfully a little revolutionary device GammaCore (developed by US-based ElectroCore Medical) that stimulates the nerve can be useful in treating acute and prophylactic treatment of migraine or medication overuse headache (MOH) in adults. Not more than the size of an electric shaver the device has to be held against the neck for around 90 seconds to give instant relief from migraine attack and in some cases even eradicate it completely. The important thing about this device is that it has no side-effects like in the case of medication and for some patients who were not responding to drug treatment GammaCore was really effective.
The device produces electrical signals when held against the right side of neck above the pulse of carotid artery and to increase the effectiveness a notch further, conductive gel is placed on it. To adjust the intensity of simulation there is a small switch on the device and as you go on stimulating until the muscle twitching is felt. GammaCore is available in Europe for professional and home users with authorization from a certified medical representative and right now it is being tested in both US and Europe on around 50 patients. GammaCore will cost £250 for a device with 150 treatments, and £150 for one with 50 treatments.
