They have built some of the most luxurious skyscrapers, and as if the skies weren’t enough, Chinese are venturing into the earth’s crust to build what they call the luxury hotel – Groundscraper – better referred to as the InterContinental Shimao Wonderland. Atkins who’ve won an international design competition for the design of a five-star hotel will, if all goes to plan, have a hotel readied in a picturesque water-filled quarry in Shanghai, China by late 2014 or early 2015. The InterContinental Shimao Wonderland when complete, is expected to be a 19-story, 380-room luxury packed facility with underwater public areas, banquet, guestrooms, restaurants, cafes and sporting areas.
Slated to have tariffs at around $300 a night, the hotel will have glass waterfall, a ten meter deep aquarium and extreme sporting activities like bungee jumping and rock climbing. Keeping sustainability a priority, the hotel will feature geothermal energy extraction and green roofs.
