Smart Screen is a fascinating security software present in all Windows since 2008. Read on after the jump to turn on smart screen in Windows 10.
What is the smart screen? The smart screen is a software first implemented in Internet Explorer 8 to repel phishing and malware. It was the first of its kind in Windows. It was brought into development because of the constant phishing and malware attacks on users who were using the Internet Explorer.
What exactly is phishing? Phishing refers to the deliberate act by someone through the use of a computer program or software to retrieve personal user information such as passwords, email etc. without letting the user know. This term is mostly synonymous with hacking as well but in a bad way. It also refers to tricking users into clicking a program or website which triggers a phishing software in it.
Malware, short for malicious software, is an upgrade on phishing. This is because malware tends to do a lot more damage. It not only gathers personal information but also unleashes malicious code on your computer which can effect computer operations. Both of these can have adverse effects on your computer.
In order to address the increasing malware and phishing attacks on Internet Explorer, Microsoft came up with an anti-malware and anti-phishing software called the Microsoft Smart Screen. Previously, the smart screen was only implemented on the Internet Explorer but since the advent of Windows 8 and Microsoft’s apparent plans to end Internet Explorer support to focus on Microsoft Edge, the smart screen has gone on to be implemented at desktop level as well.
This means that the smart screen performs regular checks on files downloaded from the internet for any suspicious or parasitic activity. It is turned on by default in Windows 10 but if its not due to any reason, we strongly recommend that you turn on smart screen through the steps below.
Step 1: Open Control Panel.
