If you ever need to know the current build of your OS, use the built-in check version feature with 2 simple steps!

There a number of times where checking your OS build might be important, especially at the time of installing cumulative updates aimed at upgrading the OS.

The above instance might be of help to you if are wondering why a newer cumulative update hasn’t reached you yet, since many of them have a prerequisite of checking your OS build number, as was the case with KB3124263 and KB3124262.

This feature will also help make sure you are on the latest build of Windows 10 and hence are capable of receiving all the latest updates for your system without any delay or inconveniences.

To begin, press Windows Key + R, next type in winver.

A new box will open up and tell you the details about the current build of your OS.

As you can see, as of the latest cumulative update, KB3124262, we are currently on OS Build 10586.71. If your system shows you the same result without being on an insider preview build, then it means you are currently (28th January, 2016) on the latest build of the OS and are capable of receiving the updates.

If for some reason you are still on a lower version, i.e. 10586.36 / 63, then it is recommended you have your system check for updates immediately to rectify the issue!

To check for updates, simply press Windows Key + S and type in check for updates.

How to make Windows check for latest updates.

If you are currently on a lower build of the OS, you might be vulnerable to exploits or other security issues that are otherwise unaddressed in that current build of Windows 10, so it is recommended to always stay up-to-date on the current OS build to avoid such security issues.
