How To Cancel Windows Update On Shutdown

We all dread not being able to get out of the Windows Update install on Shutdown, but a simple trick will teach you how to bypass it with a simple command line command!

This has been a troublesome phenomenon for many Windows users ever since XP, You have to take your laptop with you but just as you shut it down, updates begin to install and prevent your laptop from shutting down. This leeches your battery life and stops your laptop from properly going to sleep.

While there has been a solution for this ever since the early days of Windows XP, it isn’t really common knowledge and as such warrants a guide in this fast paced world where “ain’t nobody got time for that” is the golden rule.

Let’s get started, shall we?

While I don’t have any pending updates to install, you simply have to wait for the notification that updates are ready to install, when that scenario occurs, it is a simple matter of executing a relatively simple command line prompt from Run and not worry about your prolonged shutdown of your system.

To begin with, Press Windows Key + R to bring up Run.

and enter the following line in the dialog box:

Shutdown /s /t 0

No more worrying about how to cancel Windows Update on Shutdown

Do keep in mind, that upon pressing OK, your system will be IMMEDIATELY shut down (doing so will also cancel Windows updates on shut down). So make sure you have no active tasks that you forgot to save before carrying out this command!

To break it down. Shutdown is the command, /s refers to the shutting down the local system, and lastly, /t is the time delay for the command to be executed.

This is in seconds so 0 is obviously instantaneous. If you wish to set a timer for windows to shutdown, simply multiply your minutes with 60 and voila! e.g. 2 mins delayed shutdown would be 60 x 2 = 120 hence I would type Shutdown /s /t 120 and my system would shut down after 2 minutes.

I bet many of us can’t count the amount of time we have lost waiting for those dreaded updates to install and deep down telling ourselves “why didn’t I cancel Windows update on shutdown …”

Just keep this command on your finger tips and only do the system update installations before you sleep or when you have the time.

While this isn’t a relatively new tweak, it is still something we feel is still under the radar of many users. Let us know if you plan on using this in the comments.
