A team of ten students from the School of Industrial and Aeronautical Engineering of Terrassa (ETSEIAT) of the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) have designed a new age airship called Freighter Bird that can carry 200 tons of load without using any fossil fuel. This modern day Zeppelin has immense energy saving credentials as it reduces CO2 emissions and on top of that has minimal noise for an environmentally friendly ride. Freighter Bird measuring 360 meters long, 40 meters tall and weighing 400 tons with a top speed of 130 km/h would save an estimated half a million euros annually.
Freighter Bird will be powered by solar energy and the body frame will be made out of aluminum frame and fiberglass filled with helium gas to stay afloat while having 805,000 m3 of volume. The solar panels are spread across the top surface of Freighter Bird and the energy derived is stored in batteries that power the propellers located at the stern of aircraft. To provide extra boost to this airborne mode of transportation there are hydrogen tanks with leak-proof insulation to avert any unwanted damage. If you are wondering how much environmentally friendly it is, then you’ll be astounded to know that it will save 8,000 tons of CO2 and 65 tons of hydrogen oxide.
