Your PC can sometimes go all Undertaker (of WWE fame) on you i.e. waking up from the dead. To make sure it won’t do that again, disable random wake from sleep in Windows 10.
I got my personal laptop about two years from now when I enrolled for my Bachelor’s. It felt awesome. It had been plain sailing in the starting few months then came Windows 8.1. After getting that update, my laptop started acting mysteriously. Some apps started annoying me due to some bugs creeping into them but nothing was more scary then my laptop waking up randomly from sleep.
This was something that started happening recursively and it couldn’t understand why would my laptop start doing that out of nowhere. A lot of times, I would put my laptop to sleep and pack it in my bag. Then, a couple of hours later I’d take it out to use it only to find out that it has become as hot as lava due to its annoying random wake from sleep habit.
A friend advised me to not put it to sleep to often and instead shut it down. That worked superbly! However, it did become annoying after a while that I had to turn it on again and again and open all the programs. Something had to be done. Turn on computer techno mode!
While traversing the settings, I found out who the real culprit was. There wasn’t a problem with Windows’s drivers but a certain feature known as Windows Timers was turned on. It was responsible for the random wake from sleep time after time. So, if you’ve faced a similar fate, here’s how to disable random wake from sleep in Windows 10.
Step 1: Right click on the battery icon in the System Tray.
Step 2: Click on Power Options.
Step 3: Click on Change plan settings for the power plan you use.
Step 4: Click on Change Advanced Power Settings.
Step 5: In the resulting window, expand Sleep in the list of options below Power Saver.
Step 6: Expand Allow wake timers.
Step 7: Depending on what you want to do, click on Enable on the right of either Plugged in or On battery.
Step 8: Select Disable from the drop down menu as shown in the image below.
That’s it. Note that you will have to do it for each power plan to avoid random wake from sleep if you change your power plan while working on your computer.
