Personal information is extremely delicate and its leakage can be disastrous for an individual. Here we uncover a potential source of this leakage and strongly recommend you to learn how to remove personal information from photos and videos in Windows 10.
Personal information is one of the dearest things to an individual. Keeping it safe and out of the reach of others is of extreme importance to him/her. People have called for superb features in Windows that maintain their data integrity ever since major privacy and data breaches have made headlines all over the world and Microsoft has obliged in doing so.
Excellent advancements in Windows Firewall, Smart Screen and family management in Windows 10 have surely helped to calm some nerves when it comes to how secure users are when using Windows 10.
Recently, USA’s Department of Defense also announced the integration of Windows 10 in their systems. This is nothing small of a huge achievement for Microsoft. Upon hearing this news, many users would feel more relieved about the security and privacy concerns regarding Windows 10. The USA’s Department of Defense’s trust in Windows 10 is a significant sign that Windows 10 is good enough in all aspects leading them to implement the operating system in their own department.
Despite all these features, we recently encountered a non-deliberate source that might leak some personal information of users. This can happen because of your photos and videos. Whenever you snap a picture or record a video, the image or video file that gets stored contains EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) metadata. EXIF may contain the location of the picture/video, date, time and details about the camera used.
This isn’t Windows 10’s own fault, of course. Cameras are designed to store metadata in photos shot with them. It only becomes a privacy issue when you share photos online. If you’re a regular public sharer of photos and videos, learning how to remove personal information from them is useful.
Steps to remove personal information from photos and videos:
Step 1: Right click on a file photo/video file.
Step 2: Click on Properties in the context menu.
Step 3: Click on the details tab.
Step 4: Click on the blue colored remove properties and personal information.
Step 5: Click on remove the following properties from this file.
Step 6: Check the box for whatever private information you want to be removed as shown in the image below and click OK.
That’s it. Note that these properties mostly apply to JPEG and PNG files. Stay safe, and do try this at home!
