While some of hidden tricks we discover in these apps are mostly cosmetic, there is actually a hidden feature inside OneNote 2016 desktop app that will surprise you, as it will let you do your maths homework and run basic mathematical calculations.
Unbeknownst to many, OneNote has had a built-in equation editor right under our noses! Who could’ve thought that this Evernote alternative is more than just a run-of-the-mill note-taking app?
The Windows 10 desktop app is more than just able to process your language input; the app has complex applications to allow users to input mathematical equations, formulae and other problems for the users to enter and get help on solving.
Unfortunately, the Windows 10 Universal app doesn’t appear to have support for this function.
We will now guide you on how to access this hidden gem of OneNote 2016 which is readily available in most Windows 10 installations.
How to access the equation editor in OneNote 2016
Start by searching for OneNote using the search function (CTRL + S) and make sure you choose the desktop version as shown below:
Next choose an empty field on any portion of the page and press ‘CTRL’ + ‘=’ on your keyboard (certain keyboard might require you to press the Fn key if it doesn’t work for you the first time).
Once you do this you will see a new option appear in the purple ribbon that is under the design toolbar. When you click on it, you will see a world of options for various functions and the such for your tinkering purposes.
You can see from the image below that there is an entire library of options for you to explore such as entering operators, fractions, integrals, matrices, functions, brackets, scripts, and many other features.
Here is a sample of the capability in the hands of a mathematical layman who hasn’t touched the subject for nearly a decade and just remembers one formula.
