Microsoft Edge now lets you pin tabs permanently to your tabs row. Find out how to pin websites and webapps to your Edge browser after the jump.
Microsoft is really working hard on the Edge browser. The latest Insider Preview Build 14291 includes the much awaited extensions support – and as we’ll discuss in this post – support for pinned tabs.

The ability to pin tabs has been available in Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox for the longest time. In fact, I don’t even remember when they were included even though I’ve been using both browsers for several years.
Microsoft is the latest to the party, but it’s not too late. Edge browser’s direct alternative on OS X – Apple Safari – brought pinned tabs support just a few months ago. I use them quite regularly on my MacBook, so I am genuinely giddy to see them supported on Microsoft Edge, too.
What’s the point of pinning tabs?
Simple: prioritization. Our browsers tend to have dozens of tabs open at any given time. You can separate the most important tabs from the rest by pinning them. This way they maintain their position in the tab bar, without taking too much space.
One another use of pinned tabs is to keep regularly-used web apps open in the background. I’ve used pinned tabs for Pandora, WhatsApp Web, Pocket, etc. so I can quickly open these apps when I need them, instead of manually looking through all the tabs I have open.
Pinned tabs also differ with other tabs in other ways, too. Firstly, they don’t have a close button on them. You have to right-click and choose the ‘Close tab’ option to get rid of them. This ensures you don’t accidentally close them, but do so consciously. Secondly, these tabs will always open with the browser. They don’t go away even if you close the browser.
How To Use Pinned Tabs In Microsoft Edge
As of typing, this works for Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14291, which is only for Insider users. Microsoft will roll out this feature for everyone in a future Redstone build. We will let you know when that happens!
Pinning tabs in Microsoft Edge is really, really simple.
Step 1: Right-click on the tab you wish to pin.
Step 2: Click on the ‘Pin tab’ option
That’s it! The tab should now be permanently fixed to the left-most side of the tabs bar in your Edge browser.
To unpin a tab, just right-click on it again, and select the ‘Unpin tab’ option.
