How To Shut Down Your PC Using Cortana In Windows 10

Cortana continues to demonstrate how useful she can be. Today we will show you how you can use Cortana for turning off your PC like a boss!

In the past, we have constantly seen Cortana demonstrate her usefulness outside of the tasks that are presented on the surface level.

Cortana continues to stand out from the crowd by actually carrying out tasks which you only see in Hollywood movies! This guide won’t be as convoluted as our previous guide with VoiceWake, so don’t worry!

Cortana is not limited to PC shut down but it can also be used to reboot the system, or even log out. We’ll discuss how to manage your PC state after with a step by step guide.

Steps to setup PC shutdown with voice commands in Cortana

STEP 1:

Navigate to the following directory from your This PC in C: Drive.

C:Users(username)AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms

Once you are in here, right-click on an empty space in the directory, choose New and Shortcut.

Making the shortcut.

STEP 2:

A new box will open up, in it you will type shutdown.exe and click on Next.

Giving your shortcut a name.

When prompted to give the shortcut a name, give it the name of Shutdown. (remove the exe extension if needed).

Creating the shortcut

STEP 3:

When your shortcut is made, locate it in the directory, right-click on it and choose Properties.

Customizing the shortcut

A new box will open up, you will enter the following command in the dialog box of “Target” otherwise feel free to copy paste it from below to save yourself time!

C:WindowsSystem32shutdown.exe -s -t 00

Finishing the shortcut.

By default, you will see the target box showing till shutdown.exe. The addition of -s -t is as follows

-s denotes the system to shut down

-t is the time for the shut down to occur

’00’ is the delay for the time command to take place which is in seconds. So, if you wish for a delayed shutdown, you can change this to 01, for 1 second, 05 for 5 seconds, etc.

In addition, you can replace -s with a -r to have your system reboot/restart and the time setting will still apply with a delay.

Once you have added the above as you wish, just Click on Apply and OK.

And with that, you are now ready to go.

Simply close the directory and say

Hey Cortana, Open Shutdown” or “Hey Cortana, start shut down”

Proof of Concept

That’s it. This is a neat little hack which allows you to use Cortana to shutdown, or reboot your PC. You can catch the tutorial in video form below. It also covers how to lock your PC, and even log out by giving voice commands to Cortana.
