Audi City Kinect-powered showroom lets you customize your dream car with gestures

Audi has opened a news dealership near London’s Piccadilly Circus but this one is no ordinary. To everyone’s delight, this is world’s first showroom without any cars. Don’t get surprised; this is a state-of-the-art showroom that lets you select your Audi virtually in Minority Report-style using gestures – thanks to Microsoft’s Kinect and multitouch screens.

The experience to rejoice at the Audi City showroom begins with the process of selecting a car from 200 million possible choices of the German Auto-maker’s 36 car models. The user can customize a perfect car, life-size, on a 210-inch HD display using gestures recognized by Kinect cameras installed above the display. Once the model’s finalized the user can get up close with the selected car on a 32-inch 3M multitouch display to personalize the interiors and then place the car in the landscape mode on the big screen to see how your German beauty will look when it hits the road.

You cannot take a virtual ride on you customized car just yet, but it is confirmed that Audi is working on making it a reality soon. For now though, what you can do is – save the customized car on a USB drive and take it back home to show your dream car to your family members or share the images on Facebook/Twitter to freak your friends out well before you’ve even bought the car. Audi is planning to open up 20 more such showrooms around the world… I’m waiting for one in my area, are you?
