Touchpad Not Working In Windows 10? Here’s How To Fix It

A brief history about laptops: The first laptop, or the portable computer would be a more appropriate word, was developed in California in 1978 by PARC (Palo Alto Research Center Incorporated) known as Xerox NoteTaker. It had outstanding features considering the technology at that time. In a nutshell, 256 KB of RAM and a 5 MHz 8086 16-bit Intel processor. The laptop weighed in at 22 kilos.

The specs of Xerox NoteTaker and the specs of modern day laptops are simply incomparable. Take a moment and think that in today’s world, what good can 256 KB of RAM do to you? These specifications are a reflection of how far the world has advanced in the last 50 years. From 4-bit processors to 64-bit architectures, from 256 KB of RAM to 24 GB of RAM and from 4 GB of HDD space to Terabytes of space are just some of the wholesome upgrades the world of computing has experienced in the last half a century.

The advent of laptops brought with them touchpads. They proved highly popular as they eliminated the need to carry a mouse with you. They did bring with them small problems as well. The most widespread of these problems was that suddenly, out of nowhere, the touchpad not working without any reason. Read on to fix this.

NOTE: Connect an external mouse as you do need to interact with the computer to fix this.

There can be two reasons as to why the touchpad is not working. The first is that it is not properly configured. To do that, open Settings app. Click on Devices, then ‘Mouse and touchpad’.

Under Related settings, click on Additional mouse options. From the resulting Window, click on the tab that says Device Settings or ELAN.

Under Devices, check to see if your touchpad is working. If not, click on its name and then click enable to enable it as shown in the image below.

Another reason why it may not be working properly is that its drivers may not be up to date. To fix that, go to Control Panel.

Click on Hardware and sound. Then, click on Device Manager under Devices and printers.

Now click on Mice and other pointing devices which in turn will display your touchpad. Right click on it and from the context menu click on Update driver software as shown in the image below.If Windows has trouble finding them, download them from your laptop’s manufacturer’s website and your touchpad will become as fit as ever.
