Miss those old animating screensavers? Good news! You can enable screensaver in Windows 10 as well.
As a child, the animating screensavers were one of my most favorite Windows features. I used to change them almost everyday. Seeing them swirling, twisting and turning around on my desktop’s screen was a joy to watch.
Screensavers have their origins since the very early days of monitors. They were initially created to prevent cathode rays from burning the screen in cathode ray and plasma powered monitors. This is because the screen on which cathode rays are projected upon, undergoes permanent erosion due to the cathode rays falling upon them for extended periods. This is what causes black spots to appear on these computer’s screens.
Now, technology has traversed to new levels. Cathode ray powered monitors have been replaced by LCDs then later by LEDs. Now, even 3D monitors are slowly making their way into the market. Hence, the technical need for screensavers has diminished over the years. Today, the primary use of screensavers is only limited to entertainment, aesthetics and to somewhat extent, security.
Screensavers have been an ever present feature in Windows up until Windows 8. It replaced screensavers with the new lock screen. The lock screen is as aesthetically pleasing as the screensavers and offers a little bit more such as the ability to change its background, disable app notifications on it etc. However, it does not offer you the animation screensavers used to before. So if you feel like having them back, enable screensaver through the following steps.
Step 1: Open Control Panel.
Step 2: Click on Appearance and Personalization.
Step 3: Click on Change screen saver, below Personalization.
Step 4: From the resulting window, click on the tab labelled (None) below Screen Saver.
Step 5: From the drop down menu, select the screen saver of your choice as shown in the image below. This will enable screen saver for your PC.
After selecting screensaver, you can customize it such as its waiting time, text etc. further by clicking on Settings. The monitor shown in the above image will show you its preview the moment you apply your desired changes to it.
Thankfully, Screensavers have not been completely eradicated from Windows 10. They are only disabled by default but, not anymore.
