The Downloads folder is one of the most actively used ones in Windows 10. As a result of all the attention it gets, with thousands of files and folders, it can often suffer from being sluggish, being slow to open and update. We have a potential solution that fixes slowdowns caused by Downloads folder. Check it out!

Folder opening slowly

A lot of your folders, particularly the local disk drives and the Downloads folder, tend to open up real fast when they’re empty. As soon as they start to host more and more files, they start to slow down and after a while the sluggishness becomes too much to handle.

This is particularly down to the number and sizes of files in that folder. If the folder contains larger files with thumbnails, it will probably take longer than loading a folder with files that are without thumbnails e.g. Microsoft Word documents. In many cases, the selected view of the icons also play a part in their loading so it will probably be a good idea to select a view that is without thumbnails.

This is a problem most commonly experienced with the Downloads folder as it is the folder set by default where all the files users select for downloading go to. Hence, it is getting filled all the time. Opening it can be a real pain many a times particularly if you want some quick work done but Windows Clan says slowness? What slowness?

We’ve discovered the way you can put to good use to make your Downloads folder open up much quicker than before. Follow the steps below to fix the downloads folder’s slow opening speed.

Step 1 (Optional): As we mentioned earlier, the view of the icons also affect loading speed. So it will be a good idea to change the view to details by clicking on the View tab and select Details in the layout options.

Step 2: Right click on the Downloads folder.

Step 3: In the context menu, click on Properties.

Step 4: Click on the Customize tab.

Step 5: Click on the drop down menu below Optimize this folder for.

Step 6: Select General items from the list of options as shown in the image below.

Final step to optimize downloads folder

Click on OK and that’s it. Your Downloads folder will be optimized by now, and will no longer be slow to load. I assume it can be done for other folders as well. Do let us know if you try it out!
